How to Play Mahjong Solitaire
The Goal
Your goal is to remove every tile from the layout by matching identical open pairs.
The board is layered, so each move should help you reveal more tiles and create more future options.
What Counts as a Move
You can only match tiles that are open. In most cases, that means nothing is on top of the tile and at least one side is free.
If a tile is trapped between others or covered by a tile above it, you need to open the board first before using it.
Beginner Tips
- Do not rush to clear the first matching pair you see.
- Prioritize moves that uncover hidden layers or free blocked sides.
- Try to keep the board balanced so one area does not become locked.
- When multiple pairs exist, choose the move that creates the most new options.
If You Get Stuck
Re-scan the outer edges and topmost layers first, because open matches are easiest to miss there.
If no legal pairs remain, use restart or undo if available and try a different path through the layout.
